INFORMATIONAL UPDATE, February 24, 2004
Cousins all:
Here is the latest update regarding the Grandfather Mt. Games 2004,
Thursday, July 8 through Sunday, July 11. Of course, Malcolm is the Honored
Guest and the Clan is the Honored Clan. Let's have a good showing of support!
The Games will begin with the traditional Torchlight ceremony "at dark" on
Thursday evening, July 8. The Chief, as Honored Guest, will participate in
opening the Games on Friday morning. The Games will end on Sunday, July 11.
Clan Sinclair will have two tents; one tent will be "field-side" and the other
behind it with a pedestrian track separating the two. Generally we will be
situated about mid-field on the side opposite the "reviewing stand".
For more information on the Games, go to the Grandfather Mt. website at:
http://www.gmhg.org There you will find much information including a
tentative schedule, ticket order information, etc.
The Chief, President Donald L. Sinclair and his wife, Gloria, Mary Selver, Past
President Brad and Sindy Barker, and Lynne and I will be staying at Sugar
Mountain for the week. Malcolm will arrive Wednesday afternoon for a special
dinner with the GMHG's Board. For those interested, Malcolm and several of us
will be staying at the Bee Branch condos at
Sugar
Mt. As of this past Saturday, there were several units available in that area of
Sugar Mt. There are also houses available for rent.
For those interested in staying at the Sugar Mt. condos, go to:
http://www.visitsugar.com and get contact information. The pricing seems
pretty reasonable at Sugar Mt. and they have been good to deal with. There is
also a Holiday Inn just "down the road" from
Sugar
Mt. The address is: 1615 Hwy. 184, Banner Elk, NC and the phone number is
1-828-898-4571. They require a 3 night minimum stay with NO check in on Friday
or Saturday. The rate that they quoted is $149.99 per night for Thursday-Sunday.
Add 13% tax to that amount. Monday-Wednesday is $89.99, plus tax, and I believe
that a AAA/AARP discount can be applied to the M-W time period but NOT to
Thurs-Sunday. Check the pricing at Sugar Mt. Sugar Mt. is about 10 miles from
the Games.
Boone, NC is also nearby, but a little further from the Games. There are several
chain motels in Boone and many people stay there. Note that the Grandfather Mt.
Games website has a large listing of Accommodations. Check them out.
We are still in process of arranging for a Saturday evening "gathering", perhaps
rather informal. You will receive more information as it is available.
"Cousin" Ron Sinclair will again be opening the Games each day by singing the
National Anthem and he will perform at the Ceilidh on both Friday and Saturday
evenings. The Ceilidh is held at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, only a few
miles from
Sugar
Mt. If you haven't heard Ron sing, this is a MUST!
Gotta run ---- let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of
further help.
Best to you all,
Mel of South Carolina
